Fast Ferries
The ferry service is not a Remembrance Line business and does not form part of our submitted business plan. It is being developed by consultants in France and the UK who have an extensive experience of that business. We understand that the crossing will be one hour and we will work with them to create connections that will ensure an enjoyable through journey. Our plans will connect morning and afternoon crossings in both directions but we believe that there will be one or two other crossings at peak times for port-to-port business which will not be train connected. We will develop joint products that will enable travel on both rail and fast ferry services under common ticketing and conditions of travel. The ferry may, in the future, also carry vehicles so the ferry operator will then need to match the number of booked passengers to the vessel's passenger certificate. Mixing motorists, port-to-port foot passengers and train passengers requires estimating the best mix plus the rail service also needs to ensure that its trains are filled. When passengers book a through ticket to Boulogne our sales system will ensure that there is space on both train and ferry before making a through reservation and issuing the ticket. This process will mean that when through passengers reach Folkestone they will simply pass through the check-in process using the same ticket on which they travelled to the harbour. Matching the relative demands for rail and ferry seats will require co-ordination between the businesses and this is a situation that experts in both the Remembrance Line and ferry operation have experience.
