Heritage Education

History is important to children and elements of World War I are featured in Key Stages 3 and 4 of the National Curriculum. This currently covers the reasons for war being declared but looking at the after effects of the declaration will help children to also understand cause and effect. Folkestone Harbour was a logistics centre for WWI British war effort and we would wish to offer both schools and amateur genealogists presentations about the harbour's importance.

Much of the infrastructure still remains in place, enough to be able to describe how trains and ships would have worked together to keep the battle effort supported.

World War II is dealt with in primary schools in year 6. We would wish to work with other local military attractions in explaining what life was like in the local area, the side effects of enemy Cross-Channel gunfire and the Evacuation of Dunkerque.

Our approach will initially be to locate railway coaches in one of the platforms at Folkestone Harbour station giving a presentation room and a place at which lunches can be taken. We will investigate the potential for a baggage coach that can be used for short films that would expand the stories.

This is not yet part of our budgeting but is a project that, given protection being awarded to harbour heritage, we would wish to explore.
