Win/Win Solution
The Remembrance Line Association has given many presentations in order to put over its views about the importance of the harbour area. We have said that the key drivers for the seafront development are: - Best of New Design Retention of Heritage Creation of Atmosphere Ease of Access The Creative Quarter is currently suffering from poor footfall and we would wish it to be otherwise. Folkestone and Boulogne are both towns that can be successful. The twinned town of Boulogne already advertises itself as being a centre of art and heritage and to some extent Folkestone can join with it to target those markets. Wiping out heritage will wipe out a large section of the tourism market and art thrives in areas that mix important historical buildings with the best of new design. Most of the harbour area can safely be developed, existing metal sheds can be removed. The station and Outer Pier are, however, areas that have so much history that is important to the nation that they should be sympathetically integrated as a means of increasing total footfall in the wider area. Such an ambition is ready made with the existing railway and harbour structures that mark the transportation of over 10 million troop journeys and 1 million tons of freight during World War I. The solution can reduce vehicle traffic and provide some of the atmosphere that is essential - and it occupies less than 5% of the space. |
